ECO-DUCT: A Project for City-River Integration

Origin and Memory:
Water has been the central element in the history and development of Bogotá, from pre-Columbian settlements to the present day. The San Francisco River, witness to past eras, stands as a symbol of connection between different epochs and visions of progress.

The Challenge:
The ECO-DUCT project seeks not only to manage the supply and treatment of water for the citizenry but also to foster a deeper appreciation of its value in the urban landscape. The challenge lies in technically resolving the requirements of the competition in a manner coherent with the environment, using a respectful architectural language.

Fundamental Principles:
The project is based on five guiding principles:

  • Landscape Eco-Duct: Integration with the natural and urban environment.
  • Connector Eco-Duct: Linking between the city and the river, as well as between different networks.
  • Programmatic Eco-Duct: Spatial and functional design.
  • Bioclimatic Eco-Duct: Environmental and sustainable construction considerations.
  • Constructive Eco-Duct: Structural and aesthetic aspects

Weaving the City-River Relationship:
The location of the Bogotá Aqueduct Technical Laboratories between the San Francisco River Canal and the parks of the western capital symbolizes a new perspective in the relationship between the city and the river. This project aligns with sustainable development goals and represents a shift towards greater ecological awareness and water conservation.

Desafíos Urbanos:

Urban Challenges:
Bogotá’s demographic growth in the 20th century led to an expansion towards the west of the savanna, affecting the city’s environmental structure. The gradual disconnection from water bodies as part of community life has led to pollution and the burying of the river, a phenomenon that this project seeks to reverse.
